Celebrating Freedom: The U.S. Army, Whiskey Rations, and a 250th Anniversary Bourbon Worth Toasting
Long before the fireworks and backyard cookouts, Independence Day started with a fight for freedom, and the United States Army was right at the heart of it. On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress officially formed the Army, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence was signed. It was the start of something big—a force built from farmers, blacksmiths, and tradesmen ready to stand up to the British Empire. Whiskey, war, and freedom are not just titles but part of a soldier’s life.
Whiskey and the Army
Those early soldiers didn’t just carry muskets into battle—they carried grit, determination, and, believe it or not, whiskey.
Back in the days of the Revolutionary War, whiskey was a common part of a soldier’s rations. It wasn’t just a drink; it was a morale booster, a way to take the edge off long days and even longer marches. George Washington himself understood the value of whiskey, so much so that he later opened his own distillery after the war.
Fast forward to today, and that connection between whiskey and the American soldier is still alive—only now it’s being celebrated in a bottle that’s as meaningful as it is flavorful.

A Perfect Bottle of Bourbon for July 4th
Green River Distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky has partnered with the U.S. Army to release a special bourbon in honor of the Army’s 250th anniversary. Bottled at 111.1 proof, this limited release pays tribute to Veterans Day (11/11) and the long-standing bond between American whiskey and the men and women who serve.
Green River is one of Kentucky’s oldest and most respected distilleries, with roots going back to the 1800s. Their tradition of quality and craftsmanship makes them the perfect partner for a project like this—one that honors both the past and present. This partnership assists with Army morale, welfare, and recreation programs.
This bourbon is bold, full of character, and built to be remembered, just like the Army itself. Every sip is a reminder of the strength, sacrifice, and spirit of those who’ve worn the uniform over the last 250 years.
