Bourbon means Good Weather.
This is the exact type of article that many bourbon drinkers will dislike. Bourbon means good weather; what is he thinking? Well, I study bourbon, and as much as I like sampling a great-tasting bourbon, I genuinely like the historical back stories of bourbon whiskey, including some of the folklore that would be considered fanciful. Keep reading to guarantee good weather for your next outdoor event and find out about a great bottle to sample rain or shine.
A Southern Tradition
We have much to be thankful for regarding whiskey originating in the Southern United States. Tennessee Whiskey and Kentucky Bourbon are both truly southern products with extensive histories to prove it. The Sazerac cocktail, mint juleps, and hurricanes originated in the South. Hurricane, the cocktail, is not the destructive weather event that is prevalent in the South. Another cocktail with a definitive southern origin is the Grasshopper.
How does Bourbon mean Good Weather?
In the South, especially in Kentucky, there is a tradition where a bride and groom bury a bottle of bourbon at their wedding venue. This guarantees good weather on the day of their wedding, but they must follow specific guidelines for success.
- You must bury the bottle exactly 30 days before your wedding day.
- The bottle must be buried at the location of your wedding.
- The bottle of bourbon must be unopened.
- Your bottle must be buried upside down.
- If you have great weather on your wedding day, you dig up the bottle and share the bourbon as part of your celebration.
- If you have bad weather on your wedding day, you dig up the bottle and curse the weather while drinking bourbon.
Make this tradition your own
This tradition has been working for weddings for a long time, so why not your event?
- You can bury a bottle before your next golf tournament. Just do not let the course superintendent catch you.
- Bury a bottle thirty days before your next family reunion at the outdoor event location. Just be sure to turn it upside down.
- Do not start a tradition, and drink your bourbon.
