There’s something about Detroit City Distillery that just feels right. I have sampled multiple versions of bourbon and rye whiskey from them, and they were enjoyable. However, occasionally, you sample a product that is so good that it is worth talking about. The distillery offers this in a 94-Proof version and at cask-strength.

Homegrown Cask Strength Rye Whiskey

I have tasted some of the best whiskeys available today, and my palate usually leads me to bourbons over rye whiskeys. However, this Detroit City Distillery bottle of cask-strength Homegrown Rye is one of the best rye whiskeys I have ever sampled. In fact, I find myself pouring and enjoying it often. It is 128-proof beauty, with everything I look for in a rye. It has a wonderful mouth feel along with an amazing flavor profile. Starting with an enticing nose that features an intriguing amount of spice, to a wonderful toffee-like front end finishing with rye spice. It is well-rounded and not one-dimensional. It is balanced and a joy to drink.

Locally Grown and Copper Pot Distilled

Using Michigan-grown rye, it is distilled and bottled at the Detroit City Distillery. This is truly local grain to glass, and I am so happy that I sampled it. It has become my go-to rye whiskey of choice. I love the fact that this is not sourced, but a true “craft” distilled product produced in Detroit. If you have the opportunity to sample Detroit City Distillery Homegrown Rye Whiskey, you should.

Detroit City Distillery does exactly that.

Located in the heart of Eastern Market—one of the oldest and most vibrant public markets in the United States—the distillery operates out of a historic building that once served Detroit’s meatpacking industry. This isn’t a polished, manufactured experience. It’s a working part of the city’s fabric. The kind of place where the walls have stories, and the whiskey must live up to them. And in this case, it does.

What I Look for in a Rye Whiskey

What stands out most about Homegrown Rye is how comfortable it is in its own skin. It doesn’t try to overcompensate for age, and it doesn’t bury its character under heavy finishing or gimmicks. Instead, it leans into what it does well—bold spice, solid structure, and just enough sweetness to keep everything in check. And, it comes in a pretty cool bottle with a memorable label.

That’s not easy to pull off, and it impressed me more than I expected.

Too often, young craft rye falls into predictable traps. It can come across as raw and underdeveloped or overly manipulated in an attempt to hide its youth. Homegrown Rye avoids both. It’s confident, well-executed, and most importantly, enjoyable.

Detroit City Distillery itself mirrors that same approach. No shortcuts. No inflated storylines. Just a clear focus on making quality spirits that reflect where they come from.

This isn’t just a “good for a local distillery” kind of bottle. It’s a legitimately good rye whiskey, period. Detroit City Distillery—and their Homegrown Rye—have done exactly that.
