Our tasting of four different premium bourbons will be held at the EBENEZER, a uniquely decorated and appointed Speakeasy nestled in the basement of the former First National Bank of Plymouth. The main floor is home to the Ledger Restaurant.
Surrounded by an ambiance of prohibition days, we will test your palate and tell you some stories along the way. Do you have a question you’ve always wanted to ask about bourbon? This is the event for you. If you want to sharpen your tasting skills, sign up today. Blind tasting always provides some surprises to even the most seasoned bourbon drinker.
This is my first event in Wayne County in several years, and we look forward to seeing you at this event. Take a step back in time, relax, and enjoy an evening at Michigan’s Premier Speakeasy – The EBENEZER.
The Origin of the Speakeasy
The speakeasy was considered more high-end than a blind pig. Often, it would include entertainment, dancing, food, or all of the above. Usually, proper attire was required to enter. The Volstead Act, passed on January 16, 1919, provided pages and pages of laws and stipulations regarding the production, sale, distribution, and transportation of alcoholic beverages in the United States.
With the ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment, alcohol became illegal overnight. Some citizens approved of the prohibition on liquor, but many did not. People began making their moonshine or other illegally distilled liquor. Prohibition created an illegal market immediately. Across the country, illicit saloons appeared to satisfy a thirsty public. Speakeasies were at their peak during the period of the 1920s, also known as the roaring twenties.
These saloons became very popular and also extremely profitable. New York City alone was estimated to have twenty thousand to one hundred thousand speakeasies during the 1920s. New York City became known as the “City on a Still.”
